MIDI Setup

Save as default: Once audio + MIDI is configured, go to File โ†’ Save as Template. Name it "My Setup." Every new project starts pre-configured. Never set up from scratch again.

2. Interface Overview

This is your main workspace. Everything happens here.

3. Adding Tracks & Instruments

Instrument Tracks

Right-click in track list โ†’ Add Instrument Track โ†’ browse instruments:

Audio Tracks

Recording Samples Into Audio Tracks

This is how you capture sounds from external sources, resample synths, or record your own foley/vocals:

Punch In/Out recording: Set your Left and Right Locators around the section you want to re-record. Enable Punch In and Punch Out on the transport. Press Play from before the punch region โ€” recording starts automatically at the Left Locator and stops at the Right Locator. The rest of the track stays untouched. This is how you fix one bad phrase without re-recording the whole thing.

4. Quantize โ€” Every Method

Quantize snaps notes or audio to a grid. Cubase has the most detailed quantize system of any DAW.

MIDI Quantize

Audio Quantize

The Kokumo quantize method: Record MIDI live from your MPK. Apply iterative quantize at 60-70% strength with 55% swing. This tightens the timing while keeping your personal groove. If it sounds too stiff, hit Humanize with ยฑ5 ticks position and ยฑ10 velocity. Now your programmed beat feels like a real performance.

5. Transpose

6. Looping โ€” Every Scenario

Global Transport Loop

Looping a Single Sample/Clip

Making Multiple Tracks Loop Independently

Cubase doesn't have per-track loop. The transport loop affects ALL tracks. Here's how to work around this:

Making Certain Tracks Loop Then Stop

Making a Track Keep Playing During Export While Others Stop

This is about controlling what plays during mixdown:

7. MIDI Editing โ€” Piano Roll Deep Dive

Double-click any MIDI clip to open the Key Editor (piano roll). This is where you write, edit, and perfect notes.

9. The Lower Zone โ€” Every Tab Explained

At the bottom of the Project Window, you'll see a row of tabs: Track, Editor, MixConsole, Editor, Sampler Control, Chord Pads, MIDI Remote. This is the Lower Zone โ€” Cubase's inline workspace that lets you edit, mix, and control without opening separate windows. Click any tab to activate it. Click again to hide the zone. This is where the real speed lives.

Sampler Control

This is resampling made easy. Sampler Control eliminates the need for third-party samplers for quick sampling work. Record it, drag it, play it. Three steps. For deeper multi-sample instruments with velocity layers and zones, use HALion Sonic 7. But for fast creative sampling, Sampler Control is unbeatable.

Chord Pads

Chord Pads + Chord Assistant = music theory cheat code. You don't need to study harmony for 10 years. Let Cubase suggest what sounds good. Learn by doing โ€” after using Chord Pads for a while, you'll start recognizing patterns and eventually won't need the assistant. But until then, it's a shortcut that sounds professional from day one.

12. Pro Tips โ€” The Kokumo Method

Why Cubase is a favorite: Precision. Cubase's MIDI editing is surgical. The MixConsole is modeled after real hardware mixing boards. HALion Sonic 7 covers every instrument without third-party plugins. And the stability โ€” Cubase almost never crashes. When you need reliability and polish over flash and experimentation, this is the chair you sit in.
