1. Audio & MIDI Setup
Audio
- Edit โ Preferences โ Audio โ Playback and Recording โ select ASIO driver. No interface? WASAPI Shared mode works but has higher latency.
- Buffer: 256 for production/mixing. 128 for recording live. Adjust in driver settings panel.
- Sample Rate: Set per-project: 44100 Hz for streaming, 48000 for video.
- Bit Depth: 24-bit recording, 32-bit float internal processing.
MIDI
- Preferences โ MIDI โ Devices โ check MPK Mini IV. Shows as "MPK mini IV" or "USB MIDI Device."
- Enable as input. Sonar routes it to any MIDI/Instrument track automatically.
- Test: add an Instrument Track with SI-Electric Piano โ play your MPK โ sound confirms MIDI is working.
Template: Configure audio, MIDI, add your go-to instruments and groups โ File โ Save As Template. Every new project starts pre-configured.
2. Interface Overview
- Track View (Alt+1): Main workspace. Tracks listed on the left, timeline on the right. Drag tracks to reorder. Color-code for organization.
- Console View (Alt+3): Full mixing board โ faders, pans, ProChannel, inserts, sends, metering.
- Piano Roll View (Alt+5): MIDI note editor. Best piano roll in any DAW โ Smart Tool alone is worth using Sonar.
- Staff View (Alt+6): Sheet music notation. Write and edit in standard notation.
- Event List (Alt+4): Raw MIDI data โ note numbers, velocities, CCs, timestamps. Surgical precision editing.
- Toolbar: Select, Move, Draw, Erase, Trim, Split, Mute tools. Plus the Smart Tool that combines select/draw/resize based on cursor position.
3. Adding Tracks, Instruments & Recording
Instrument Tracks
- Right-click track pane โ Insert Instrument Track โ browse VST plugins: Vital, Surge XT, HALion, any installed VST.
- Built-in soft synths: SI-Bass Guitar, SI-Electric Piano, SI-Drum Kit, SI-String Section โ all free, decent quality for sketching.
Audio Track Recording
- Right-click โ Insert Audio Track โ Mono (vocals, single mic) or Stereo (keyboards, stereo pair).
- Set input to your interface channel in the track Inspector.
- Arm the track (red R button) โ hit Record on transport โ perform โ Stop.
- Audio saved as WAV in your project's Audio folder.
Recording Samples Into Tracks
- From mic: Create Audio Track โ route input โ arm โ record. Voice, instruments, record player, room sounds โ anything your mic captures becomes a clip.
- From external gear: If your synth/keyboard has audio outputs into your interface, create Stereo Audio Track โ arm โ record while playing. You're printing hardware audio to disk.
- Bounce to audio: Select a MIDI clip on an Instrument Track โ Edit โ Bounce to Clip(s). Sonar renders the MIDI through the instrument into audio. The original MIDI stays. Now you have audio to edit, chop, reverse.
- Punch In/Out: Set Left/Right markers โ enable Punch In/Punch Out on the transport. Recording only happens between markers โ fix one phrase without re-recording the whole take.
4. ProChannel โ Built-In Channel Strip
Every track in Sonar gets ProChannel โ a professional channel strip built into the mixer. This alone makes Sonar competitive with $500+ DAWs.
- QuadCurve EQ: 4-band parametric with spectrum analyzer. Surgical frequency shaping on every channel without loading a plugin. High-pass filter to cut rumble below 80 Hz. Notch to remove problem resonances. Shelves to shape overall tone.
- PC76 Compressor: Modeled after the legendary UREI 1176 hardware compressor. Fast attack, classic coloring. Used on vocals, drums, bass โ everything. Ratio, attack, release, output gain. The sound of rock, hip-hop, and pop production.
- Tube Saturation: Adds harmonic richness โ even harmonics that warm and thicken sound. Subtle settings for polish, aggressive settings for distortion. Every track can have analog tube character.
- Tape Emulation: Simulates recording to magnetic tape โ gentle compression, saturation, high-frequency rolloff, low-end warmth. The "glue" that makes digital recordings sound expensive and cohesive. The reason vintage records sound "warm."
- Signal chain order: Drag ProChannel modules to reorder. EQ โ Compressor โ Tube โ Tape is a common chain. But try Tape โ Tube โ EQ โ Compressor for a different character. Order changes the sound dramatically โ experiment.
Real talk: ProChannel gives you EQ + Compressor + Tube Saturation + Tape Emulation on EVERY track for FREE. In other DAWs, you'd need to buy and load 3-4 separate plugins per track. This alone justifies using Sonar.
5. Quantize โ Every Method
MIDI Quantize
- Select MIDI notes in Piano Roll โ Process โ Quantize (or Q).
- Resolution: 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, triplets, dotted. Choose the grid matching your fastest notes.
- Strength: 100% = full snap. 75% = mostly on grid. 50% = halfway. Lower values preserve human timing feel.
- Swing: Percentage in the Quantize dialog. 50% = straight. 55-65% = shuffle/groove. Applied after grid quantize.
- Window: Only quantize notes that are within X ticks of a grid line. Notes already close to the grid get snapped; notes far from the grid stay untouched. Smart selective correction.
- Humanize: Process โ Humanize. Adds random variation to position, velocity, and duration. Makes programmed MIDI sound performed.
AudioSnap (Audio Quantize)
- Sonar's built-in audio quantization system. Select an audio clip โ open the AudioSnap palette (Shift+A).
- Transients are detected automatically โ visual markers appear on every drum hit, note attack, etc.
- Quantize the transients to the grid โ audio stretches to match. This quantizes recorded drums, bass, guitar, vocals โ any audio.
- Adjust individual transients manually: click and drag to move specific hits to the grid while leaving others untouched.
- AudioSnap uses Sonar's time-stretching algorithm. Choose the algorithm quality: higher quality = more CPU, fewer artifacts.
6. Transpose
MIDI Transpose
- Quick: Select notes โ Shift+โ/โ = ยฑ1 semitone. Ctrl+Shift+โ/โ = ยฑ1 octave.
- Dialog: Process โ Transpose. Enter semitones (+12 = up one octave, -7 = down a fifth). Options: keep notes in playable range, transpose by scale degree.
- Track-level: In the Track Inspector, set the Transpose value. All MIDI on that track plays transposed without changing note data. Non-destructive.
Audio Transpose
- Process โ Pitch Shift on audio clips. Set semitones and cents.
- ARA2 + Melodyne: If you have Melodyne, Sonar integrates it directly into the audio editor. Per-note pitch correction for vocals โ each note is independently adjustable. Drag flat notes up, sharp notes down. Professional vocal tuning without leaving the DAW.
7. Looping โ Every Scenario
Transport Loop
- Click and drag in the timeline ruler to set a loop region. Press L to toggle loop on/off.
- All tracks loop together within the loop markers. Standard global loop behavior.
Groove Clip Looping โ Sonar's Secret Weapon
- Right-click any audio clip โ Groove Clip Looping โ enable.
- Now drag the right edge of the clip โ it repeats infinitely, automatically stretching to match project tempo.
- Change your BPM from 90 to 140 โ groove clips follow without manual time-stretching. Change it back โ they follow again. Zero work.
- Works with melodic loops too โ bass lines, synth riffs, vocal chops, pad textures. Anything becomes a tempo-locked loop.
- Building a library: Save your best loops as Groove Clips. Next project, drag them in, they auto-match tempo. Instant building blocks for every production.
Independent Track Looping
- Sonar's transport loop affects all tracks. For independent behavior:
- Different clip duplication lengths: Duplicate a 4-bar drum clip 8 times (32 bars total). Duplicate a 2-bar bass clip 16 times (also 32 bars). Now drums loop every 4 bars and bass loops every 2 bars โ different effective loop lengths on the same timeline.
- Groove Clip drag: Enable Groove Clip on each track's audio. Drag each to different lengths โ drums 32 bars, hi-hat 16 bars, bass 24 bars. Each stops at its own point.
Making Tracks Loop Then Stop
- Simply don't extend clips beyond where you want silence. If drums run 32 bars but hi-hat should stop at bar 16, only place 16 bars of hi-hat clips. Bar 17 onward = silence on that track.
- Mute tool (M): Click on clip sections you want silent. They stay visually but don't play. Un-mute anytime.
- Volume automation: Draw the track's volume automation to zero at the stop point. Automate back up when you want it to return. Allows smooth fades instead of hard cuts.
Making Tracks Play During Export
- Solo tracks you want โ File โ Export Audio. Only soloed tracks render.
- Mute tracks you don't want. Everything unmuted renders.
- Stem export: Solo each track individually โ export one at a time. Or use batch export to render all tracks as separate files simultaneously.
8. MIDI Editing โ Piano Roll Deep Dive
- Double-click any MIDI clip to open the Piano Roll View.
- Smart Tool (most important feature): Automatically switches between Select, Draw, and Resize based on where your cursor hovers. Top of note = move. Right edge = resize. Empty space = draw new note. Bottom = velocity edit. This eliminates tool-switching entirely โ you edit at the speed of thought.
- Inline Piano Roll: Edit MIDI directly in the Track View without opening a separate window. Click the disclosure arrow on any MIDI track โ the piano roll appears inline. Edit while seeing the full arrangement context.
- Controller lanes: Below the piano roll, add lanes for CC1 (mod wheel), CC11 (expression), CC64 (sustain), pitch bend, aftertouch. Draw curves with the pencil for evolving expression.
- Multiple note selection: Click+drag to lasso. Ctrl+Click to add/remove from selection. Ctrl+A = select all.
- Velocity editing: In the velocity lane, drag bars up/down per note. Or: select notes โ Process โ Velocity Scale to compress/expand dynamic range across selected notes.
9. Mixing in Console View
- Press Alt+3 to open the full Console.
- Channel strip: Volume fader, Pan knob, Mute (M), Solo (S), Record Arm (R), Input Monitor.
- ProChannel: Expand per-track โ EQ, Compressor, Tube, Tape modules always available. See Section 4.
- Inserts: Additional effect slots beyond ProChannel. Load any VST effect โ reverb, delay, chorus, specialized processors.
- Sends: Route signal to Bus tracks. Create a Reverb Bus (Bus track with reverb loaded) โ send multiple tracks to it โ control send level per track. Shared reverb saves CPU and creates cohesive space.
- Bus/Group routing: All drums โ Drum Bus. All synths โ Synth Bus. Process the groups: compression on the Drum Bus glues all drum tracks. EQ on the Synth Bus carves space for vocals.
- Automation: Right-click any parameter โ "Write Automation." Hit Play โ move the parameter โ Sonar records the movement as an automation envelope in the timeline. Envelopes are visible on each track and editable with the pencil tool.
- FX Chain: Create serial (effects one after another) or parallel (split signal, process separately, blend) chains. Parallel compression is one click โ one chain dry, one chain smashed, blend together.
10. Exporting
- File โ Export Audio
- Formats: WAV (lossless), MP3 (320 kbps max), WMA, FLAC, OGG.
- Bit depth: 16 for streaming, 24 for masters, 32-float for stems.
- Track selection: All Tracks, Selected Tracks, or individual Buses. Solo/mute to control what renders.
- Stem export: Solo each track โ export individually. Or use batch export for all tracks simultaneously.
- Dither: Apply when going from 24-bit to 16-bit for final delivery. Reduces quantization noise.

12. Pro Tips โ The Kokumo Method
- ProChannel on every track. At minimum, use the EQ (cut lows below 80 Hz on non-bass tracks) and Compressor (tame peaks) on every channel. Free professional processing.
- Smart Tool in Piano Roll. Once you master it, you edit MIDI faster than any other DAW. Zero tool-switching โ your cursor IS the right tool based on position.
- Groove Clips are building blocks. Build a library of tempo-matched loops. Drop them into any project at any BPM. Instant arrangements from reusable pieces.
- AudioSnap for live recordings. Recorded a live drummer who rushes? AudioSnap detects every hit and snaps them to the grid. Tight but human because you control the strength.
- ARA2 + Melodyne is professional vocal production. Per-note pitch correction, formant editing, timing correction โ all inline without bouncing. This workflow costs $100+ in other DAWs.
- Sonar is free. Unlimited tracks, ProChannel, VST support, groove clips, AudioSnap โ zero cost. There is literally no barrier to entry. Download it, install it, produce.
- Freeze tracks for CPU. Ctrl+F on any track โ Sonar renders it to audio temporarily, freeing CPU for more instruments. Unfreeze to edit later.
